Inherited from Byzantine Greek καταφτάνω (kataphtánō), from Hellenistic Koine Greek καταφθάνω (kataphthánō).[1] By surface analysis, κατα- (completely) +‎ φτάνω (arrive). Doublet of καταφθάνω (kataftháno).
