Inherited from Byzantine Greek τσιμπῶ (tsimpô), with altered ending after verbs ending in -άω (-áo), from earlier *τσιμπίζω (*tsimpízō) via its aorist forms *τσιμπισ- (*tsimpis-), itself from *εξεμπίζω (*exempízō), from ἐξ- (ex-) + ἐμπίς f (empís, mosquito) + -ίζω (-ízō).[1]
