Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from a Mongolic language; otherwise it is hard to explain word initial /s/; compare Mongolian санаа (sanaa, thought). Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *sāna- (to think), from *sān (number, counting), from *sā- (to think, count). Cognate with Turkish say- (to count, regard).
