Etymology[edit]

Uncertain, first attested from 1771, likely from Ottoman Turkish چالمق (çalmak, to warp) or a Turkic cognate of it. The noun чал (čal, rope) is rare and possibly deverbal. There is also ча́лка (čálka, rope).
