Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Perhaps a Caucasian borrowing; compare Georgian ხაზი (xazi, line, row), Udi [script?] (xaz, line). Alternatively, an Iranian borrowing, ultimately going back to Proto-Iranian *xad-s-, sigmatic aorist of *xad- (to beat, inflict a wound); compare Parthian [script?] (xʾz-, to devour), Sanskrit खिदति (khinati, to tear; to press down).
