From Proto-Indo-European *smukʷʰ- (“to smoke; a smoke”). Cognates include Ancient Greek σμύχω (smukhō, “burn with smoldering flame”), Old Irish múch (“smoke”), Old English smoca (English smoke), German Schmauch (“dense smoke”) and perhaps Russian смуглый. See also մուրկ (murk).
