Etymology[edit]

A Kartvelian borrowing; compare Laz ჩხური (č’xuri, sheep), Mingrelian შხური (šxuri, sheep), Georgian ცხვარი (c’xvari, sheep). These literally mean “living, animate”; compare Georgian ცხოველი (c’xoveli, alive; animal), ცხოვრება (c’xovreba, life).
