Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian [script needed] (fratom), Old Persian [script needed] (fratama), Sogdian [script needed] (prtmw), Avestan [script needed] (fratəma), Sanskrit प्रथम (prathamá), all meaning “first”. The Iranian word is cognate with Russian спорый (sporyj, abundant), Latin pro-sper (favourable), Sanskrit स्फिर (sphirá, much, abundant).
