From Proto-West Semitic *ʕaḏr- m (help, verbal noun); the meaning of this verb *ʕaḏar- (to assist) has specialized in Arabic عُذْر (ʕuḏr) and Sabaean 𐩲𐩹𐩧 (ʿḏr, excuse, pardon) but is also kept in Sabaean 𐩲𐩹𐩧 (ʿḏr, followers; community).
