From Middle Persian ʾls (ars, tear), from Proto-Iranian (compare Avestan asrū-, asrūazan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit and Hindi अश्रु (aśru)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱru-, from compound *dr̥ḱ-h₂eḱru- (eye bitter) (compare *dáḱru-). Other cognates include Old Armenian արտօսր (artōsr), Lithuanian ãšara, English tear.
