From Proto-Iranian *marka-, from Proto-Iranian *marč- (to destroy, damage), from a blend of Proto-Indo-European *mer- (to die) and Proto-Indo-European *melkʷ- (to damage).[1] Compare with Northern Kurdish merg, Pashto مرګ (marg), Ossetian марг (marg, poison), and Ancient Greek βλάπτω (bláptō, to disable, harm).[2]
