Arabic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From the root ه ي ل (h-y-l) in the sense of a pile or cluster of things together; piled sand, dust particles. A phono-semantic matching of Ancient Greek ὕλη (húlē, “stuff, matter, substance”, literally “wood, raw material”), supported by the presence in Classical Syriac ܗܝܘܠܐ (hiyūlā), ܗܘܠܐ (hūlā), ܗܝܠܐ (hīlā, “matter, material; wood”).
