Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *sew- (“juice, liquid”). Compare to Latvian sula, Old English sylian, Old High German sullen, Modern German sühlen, Old Saxon sulwian, Norwegian søyla, Sanskrit सार (sāra, “substance”), Avestan hurā, Modern Persian گيلان (gilān). Note however Latin silva.
