Borrowed from Classical Persian استاد (ustād, master), from Middle Persian ʾwstʾt' (awestād, master, craftsman), from Old Persian. Compare Assamese ওস্তাদ (üstad), Bengali ওস্তাদ (ōstad), Punjabi ਉਸਤਾਦ (usatād).
