From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ĵantúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́antúš, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁- (to produce, give birth). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬥𐬙𐬎 (zantu).
