Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀝𑀸𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀼𑀓 (*ṭāppuka). Cognate with Marathi टापू (ṭāpū), Bengali টাপু (ṭapu), Odia ଟାପୁ (ṭapu), Assamese টাপু (tapu).
