Etymology

Mayrhofer is skeptical of assigning any etymology to the root. He seems to have a preference for linking the root to Proto-Indo-European *dʰregʰ- (“to run, drag, pull”), but notes that any evidence for a connection looks to be arbitrary.

On the other hand, Orel indirectly notes a derivation from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰráȷ́-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰráȷ́-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰreǵ- (“to glide, swoop”), and connects the root to Lithuanian drėgti (“to become moist”) and English drink.
