From Proto-Indo-Iranian *pak-, *pač-, from Proto-Indo-European *pekʷ- (to cook, become ripe). Cognates include Latin coquō, Old Church Slavonic пекѫ (pekǫ) (whence Russian печь (peč')), Tocharian B päk-, Albanian pjek, Avestan [script?] (pačaiti), and Ancient Greek πέσσω (péssō).
