Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan (whence Punjabi ਹੱਡਾ (haḍḍā), ਹੱਡੀ (haḍḍī)), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀳𑀟𑁆𑀟 (haḍḍa), from Sanskrit हड्ड (haḍḍa), whence also the native हाड़ (hāṛ).
