Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan (whence Punjabi ਹੱਡੀ (haḍḍī)), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀳𑀟𑁆𑀟 (haḍḍa), from Sanskrit हड्ड (haḍḍa). By surface analysis, हड्डा (haḍḍā) + -ई (-ī).
