Usage notes[edit]

It is a common practice in South Indian Hindu households, especially in Tamil and Malayalam speaking diasporas to draw a little Pillayar Suzhi at the top center of the page whenever they begin writing in it. It is believed to invoke the Hindu god Ganesha also known as Pillaiyar, the remover of obstacles. Sometimes the letters (u) or (u) are also used in place of this symbol. Pillayar Suzhi is also called गणेश प्रतीक (gaṇeś pratīk).
