From Sanskrit दीर्घ (dīrgha) +‎ -ము (-mu), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *drHgʰa-, from Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁gʰós (long). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎥 (d-r-g /⁠darga⁠/), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬔𐬀- (darəga-, long), Latin longus, Old Church Slavonic дльгъ (dlĭgŭ).
