Etymology

Cognate with Lao ກະທຸງ (ka thung, “pelican”).

Possibly from กระ (grà) +‎ ทุง (tung).

Its ultimate etymology is uncertain. Shorto proposed to be Austroasiatic. Compare Khmer ទុង (tung, “pelican”).
