Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Pali khetta (field; plot of land; arable land; site), from Sanskrit क्षेत्र (kṣetra, region; area; field), whence also Thai เกษตร (gà-sèet, cultivated land; field). Cognate with Lao ເຂດ (khēt, area; district; region; territory), Khmer ខេត្ត (khaet, province; district; territory) and possibly Tocharian B keta (garden-plot; field).
