Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Traditionally grouped together with ἔροτις (érotis, feast) and ἑορτή (heortḗ, feast, festival), but Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin.

ἔρᾰνος (éranosm (genitive ἐρᾰ́νου); second declension

  1. meal to which each contributed his share
  2. (in general) feast, festival, banquet
  3. loan raised by contributions for the benefit of an individual
  4. favour, service, especially one which brings a return
  5. permanent association apparently religious in character
