Etymology[edit]

伊勢 +‎ (attributive particle) +‎ 大神 (literally great god), so called because Amaterasu is most prominently worshipped at the 伊勢(大)神宮 (Ise (Dai)jingū, Ise (Grand) Shrine) in Ise Province (now Ise City, Mie Prefecture).
