Etymology[edit]
Transcription from German "Deutsch/deutsch" ("Germany, of Germany"). The choice of characters was inspired by 德 ("morality") and 意志 ("a person's intent"). The tendency to use commendatory characters in country names was also seen in "美国" ("America", lit. pretty country), "英国" ("England", lit. flower/outstanding country) and "法国" ("France", lit. the law country).
