|Kanji in this term|
|さくら||き > ぎ|
Compound of 桜 (sakura, “cherry, cherry tree”) + 木 (ki, “tree”). The ki changes to gi due to rendaku (連濁). The term sakura on its own is ambiguous, and could be used to mean either the tree or the blossom. The addition of ki ("tree") makes this distinction clear.
