  2. a pulpit; the seat from which a priest delivers services
    • 1994, Yamanaka Yutaka, Heian jidai no kokiroku to kizoku bunka [Heian period historical documents and letters], page 218:
      (こう)()(れい)(ばん) いずれも(どう)師・呪(し・じゅ)(がん)がすわる()で、(こう)()(みなみ)(れい)(ばん)()かれたと(かんが)えられる。
      Kōza reiban izure mo dōshi jugan ga suwaru za de, kōza no minami ni reiban ga okareta to kangaerareru.
      Kōza and reiban are the seats where the officiating priest and the prayer leader sat; it is thought that the reiban was positioned to the south of the kōza.
