Inherited from Old East Slavic -ьѥ, -ье (-ĭje, -ĭe), from Proto-Slavic *-ьje. Doublet of -ие (-ije), a borrowing from Church Slavonic.

  1. Alternative form of -ье (-ʹje) (stressed).
    бе́лый (bélyj, white) + ‎-ьё (-ʹjó) → ‎бельё (belʹjó, underwear, bedding, laundry)
    ста́рый (stáryj, old) + ‎-ьё (-ʹjó) → ‎старьё (starʹjó, old junk)
