From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Chinese compound 隣國／邻国 (lin kwok, literally “neighbor, next + country”).

After the term was borrowed into (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Japanese, the 隣／邻 (lín) character in the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Chinese spelling was replaced by 鄰／邻 (lín), moving the radical to the other side. Compare modern (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Mandarin 鄰國／邻国 (línguó).
