Etymology[edit]
From Low German Bangbüx(e); analysable as bang (“afraid”) + Büxe, the latter being a rarer variant of Buxe (“trousers, pants”). Compare Angsthase (thought to be an alteration of *Angsthose), Dutch bangebroek, English shit one's pants.
