As an Italian surname, from the nickname cassaio (“maker of cases”), from cassa. Also as a spelling variant of Cesare, Caesar.^[1]^[2]
As a Maltese surname, from Arabic كَسَّر (kassar). This could also have been influenced by Caesar. More at Cassar.
