  1. any long construction for people to hold on to or prevent them from falling down: railing, guardrail, handrail, banister, balustrade, parapet.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Railings on ships are usually called Reling, and parapets are usually called Brüstung. However, these may also be considered types of Geländer.
