Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Khmer Kambuja (Kambuja) (modern Khmer កម្ពុជា (kampuciə)), itself a borrowing from Sanskrit काम्बोज (kāmbōja), the name of a tribe mentioned in Hindu scripture.
