Etymology[edit]

Masoch +‎ -ismus, the former named after Austrian novelist Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Masoch may be a Germanized form of a lost Slavic placename, as Poland and Ukraine used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
