Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From dis- (privative) +‎ ment- (mind) +‎ -icāre (verb-forming suffix).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

*dismenticāre (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)

  1. forget

Reconstruction[edit]

The outcomes without /d/ seem to reflect sporadic substitution of the prefix dis- with ex-. (Interchange between the two privatives is common, especially in Italy.) The preponderance of the /d/ forms,[1] however, suggests that *dismenticāre is original.
