Etymology[edit]

Onomatopoeic, from the nestling call *pi-pi + *-lę. Likely of Proto-Balto-Slavic origin, akin to Latvian pīle (duck), Lithuanian pỹlė (duck).

Compare also Proto-Slavic *pisklę (whence Polish pisklę) = *piskati (to shriek) +‎ *-lę.
