Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German sterke (“heifer”). Cognate with Dutch sterke. Also related with English stirk. Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *ster- (“barren, sterile”), to which compare the semantic development in Queene. Alternatively related with Stier.
