Calque?[edit]

- @Barytonesis: I'm not sure. τῆλε (têle) means 'far', sure enough, but φωνή (phōnḗ) doesn't actually mean 'speaker'. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 13:34, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Angr: you're right, but I wonder how telephone was truly coined. -phone could as well come from -φωνος (φωνέω (phōnéō) + -ος (-os)). --Barytonesis (talk) 13:46, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
- Also, the French word (which is apparently the first) is masculine, not feminine. That might be totally irrelevant, but I don't know. --Barytonesis (talk) 13:48, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
