Etymology[edit]
turpe- + -(i)nen. Possible origins include turpea (“bloated, swollen”) (which in Karelian dialects can also mean "thick, fat", thus possibly a byname/nickname), turve (“peat, turf”) and vernacular forms of the Russian name Дорофей (Dorofej).[1]
