Welcome text[edit]

Here is what you SHOULD HAVE GOT... I guess. geez.

Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Equinox 02:59, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

edit: I read your message, and this is really confusing. I do thank you for your efforts to help me. I prefer to use my Wiktionary user profile to share updates about my personal life. I did write that I speak English, Spanish, and Irish (en español). I don't want to use BabelBox; I don't want to be overconfident. I could edit on Wikipedia, but Wiktionary is easier. I've written a few pages for Oneida words even though I most positively do not speak Oneida! I was able to cite my sources though. I can definitely contract an OG on Wiktionary talk if I need help. Audio files[edit]

Thank you for your contributions! However, I think you should get a better microphone. Some of your audio files, especially on gyatt, are barely comprehensible. Ioaxxere (talk) 21:09, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I haven't recorded audio in a month, and it didn't work on my family's silver computer. microphone works on other audio recording websites on the silver Chromebook, but not lingualibre. today I logged into Wiktionary on my Samsung mobile phone, and I've tried to record audio. several times I would need to re-record audios on my mobile phone several times. the microphone is very sensitive, and it's so easy for my microphone to go red because it says I'm too loud. I need to whisper and hold the phone far from myself to prevent the microphone from giving up on me. it isn't this sensitive when I use a regular voice recorder (I'm a singer). would it work to buy a microphone that hooks up to my mobile phone or computer from the headphone jack or by wireless connection? Flame, not lame (talk) 21:15, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see, I did notice that your old recordings sound very good. In that case I think you should use the same method you used back then. Ioaxxere (talk) 21:27, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I understand that, but my family's silver computer will no longer work to record audios (when I test the microphone, it doesn't sound), so I will need to find a better device. Flame, not lame (talk) 21:32, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I logged in on my old cell phone, and I've been revising my audios. Flame, not lame (talk) 23:53, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
you might be able to tell by listening to my older audios (computer vs mobile phone) that I had a good microphone on my computer but not my cell phone.

Example sentences[edit]

Hi! Sorry for the delay, I tend to avoid my e-mail, talk page, etc. and live in a state of hibernation. So I just read what you wrote on 14 March. I would say generally: "pick the most mainstream/old/documented/provable thing", I know that's boring, but suppose we are citing an everyday word like "tree", it's better to find some ancient 1800s Charles Dickens than to find Jay-Z talking about a tree. Right? (Because we are trying to establish how long ago this word existed.) On the other hand if we are really talking about a brand-new word like some slang that popped up recently, then of course, you grab what you can. And there is slang that you can easiest find in song lyrics... You're probably asking why I deleted one or two of your "usage examples" and (as far as I remember) it was because they seemed super-specific to you, like "my teacher Mr X" or... End of the day it's boring to find stuff in published texts, but much more reliable if you do. Thanks for asking. blah blah. BTW I have enjoyed your audio pronunciations, partly because it's so damn annoying to do it that I gave up, and partly because you have the most intense vocal fry that I have ever heard. Go you. Equinox 01:39, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Further tips: try to make an example sentence that will survive through time, like a nice stone statue. In other words don't refer to some YouTuber or TV series... lol. Well you get it. Okay I'm done. Equinox 01:48, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
alright, nice insights. I will definitely look into that. some of the example sentences are based off personal experiences or people I know. I've quoted from articles to topics I'm interested in (like Seven by Jungkook as an example of night after night).
are there any specific audios that sound like I really do have that intense "vocal fry" you're referring to? I sing in the girls' a cappella group. I did record a few audios today that I haven't uploaded yet, and I'll focus on delivering my pronunciation files. Flame, not lame (talk) 02:28, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
You have read WT:CFI right? It seems like you popped up and did a lot of work and nobody sent you the "HELLO NEWCOMER" like when you move into Midland, TX. As I said. boring boring boring, that's how it goes. But yeah quoting something that your K-pop waifu said yesterday is not going to fly. (And vocal fry ain't a bad thing. It's just a speech style. It's very noticeable.) I used to do audios ages ago but it was just so fucking tedious, you have to push every one through the WIKIMEDIA LEGAL LICENSING and -- I had software to do it, but even then it was tiresome, so I stopped. Admittedly this was probably like a decade ago, apparently it's easier now. Stick with it, I always enjoy your audios. Oh that was it: why do you only do dirty words? But I know why: because they are funny. I'll add British versions when they make it easy. Equinox 02:50, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I opened that page in new tab..if you look at all of my edits, then you'll know that I don't exclusively do dirty words (sorry, Dad!). I love doing audios, but it's easier on my computer. one of my computers blocks recording but I can prerecord on my brown phone (I type the message on my green phone) and upload on one of my computadoras to speed up the process.
a little bit about me:

How do you do the recordings so easily? I stopped doing them because it was so fricking tiresome, you had to upload it to Wikimedia, and click ticky licensing boxes, and... Is it easy now?? BTW if you weren't sure about the "vocal fry" then listen to your final syllable at cunnilingual: guAALLL it sounds like bacon crackling on a stove. bye. Equinox 07:21, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
that's odd because I don't have that problem. on my brown phone I just click allow and write a list of words and phrases I anticipate to record and I record them and it saves them all at once. yes, I have to upload the completed file one by one but it doesn't bother me. Flame, not lame (talk) 12:16, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox It's way easier now using LinguaLibre. You can just input a list of words (or have it generate them from a category, e.g. RFA) and it will let you record them, automatically scroll past it once it's detected and recorded your voice, and at the end it batch uploads hundreds in one go without your having to push any license nonsense or anything like that — basically full auto. When I had massive enthusiasm for it I could easily do 400+ in an hour or so, so much that I overran the default upload ratelimit and had to get autopatrolled lmao. I had no idea. I can look into it one my computer when I get home.becayse the cell phone is difficult. Flame, not lame (talk) 19:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Mobile editing complications[edit]

Thanks for writing to me. "I am screwing up because I am using a phone" is not really an excuse, you are still screwing it up, just admitting it (like "sorry I robbed the bank" while carrying a bag full of jewels). We would miss your fun voice audios though. You asked: how can you make it easier. So you might want to talk on WT:GP ("grease pit") where there are lots of technical nerds who can tell you about voice recording. Good luck! Equinox 22:15, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

ok. I got home from work and need to get some sleep as a type this on my green cell phone. I guess I can log into lingua libre on another computer to do audios (didn't work on dad's old phone when one computer and two phones gave up on me). it's like Lingua Libre is a "2 month contract" for all of my devices before they betray me.
I guess I can postpone Wiktionary edits for when I can use my computer instead of rushing to do it on my cellphone. I don't want to be written off as a vandal. sadly computer science didn't teach me how to be a Wiki expert!
I'm so sad Wiktionary and Lingua Libre are driving me up the wall but I thank every one of you experts for helping me grow! keep grinding! Flame, not lame (talk) 02:52, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
