Hungarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

ajtó (“door”) +‎ fél, originally a genitive construction; the latter element of debated origin:

  1. Deriving from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pele or *pēle (“column, stang”),[1] compare Finnish pieli (“jamb, post”), Estonian peel (“pole, post”), and Moksha [script needed] (päĺ, “peg, pole”). This Hungarian term then coincided with the presumably unrelated Hungarian fél (“half”) and the (definitely unrelated) Hungarian fél (“to be afraid”).[2]
  2. Deriving from fél (“half, side”).[2]

Although neither origin can be excluded, the first seems to be more likely, while even in that case the sense fél (“half”) may have affected the development of this term.[3]
