From Proto-Germanic *uzlagjaną, equivalent to ā- +‎ leċġan. Cognate with Old High German irleccan (German erlegen), Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (uslagjan).
