From Medieval Latin, of Germanic origin, from Old Frankish *allōd (“allodium, patrimony”, literally “entire property”), from Proto-Germanic *alaudan (“allodium, transferable possessions”), from Proto-Germanic *allaz (“all”) + *audaz (“goods”). Cognate with Old High German ōt (“property”), Old Saxon ōd (“estate, wealth”), Old English ēad (“possessions”).
