From Medieval Latin, of Germanic origin, from Old Frankish *allōd (allodium, patrimony, literally entire property), from Proto-Germanic *alaudan (allodium, transferable possessions), from Proto-Germanic *allaz (all) + *audaz (goods). Cognate with Old High German ōt (property), Old Saxon ōd (estate, wealth), Old English ēad (possessions).
