Norwegian Nynorsk[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /²bøː.lə/, /²bøː.ɽə/

Etymology 1[edit]

From Old Norse byrða. The -l- is due to the thick L transition from Old Norse -rð- to a retroflex flap, normally written as l.

Alternative forms[edit]

Noun[edit]

bøle f (definite singular bøla, indefinite plural bøler, definite plural bølene)

  1. a chest made from boards, used to store grain, flour or breads

Etymology 2[edit]

From Old Norse bœli n, in an umlaut relationship with bol (from Old Norse ból). The verb might be from the noun, but could also be created with bol as the base for a causative verb. If so, it is akin to the English verb build.
