Etymology

From Middle Irish blaí lín, brá lín (“linen sheet”), by dissimilation, but also influenced in form by brat (“cloth”) and assimilated to the suffix -ín. The first part blaí is from Old Norse blæja (“veil”), from Proto-Germanic *blahjǭ (“cloth”).
