Hungarian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

First attested in 1853. Back-formation from cégér (shop sign). For the back-formation, compare gyök from gyökér. Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. The reason for its creation may have been the fact that in the 19th century, industrial and commercial companies were formed from numerous workshops and manufactories marked with shop signs.[1]
