Cars Pēteris Lielais (1682-1721)

Etymology[edit]

A borrowing from Russian царь (tsar’) ("tsar"), itself a borrowing, ultimately from Latin Caesar; cf. the parallel form ķeizars (emperor).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

cars m (1st declension, feminine form: cariene)

  1. tsar (male monarch of the Russian empire (especially before 1721); his title)
cars Pēteris Lielais — Tsar Peter the Great
cara valdība, monarhija — the tsar's government, monarchy
cara galms — the tsar's court
cara tronis — the tsar's throne
cara laikā — in the time of the tsar

Declension[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

Officially, the title of cars in Russia was replaced with imperators in 1721, though the word cars, in Latvian as in other languages, continued to be popularly used to refer to the rulers of the Russian Empire.
