From Middle Welsh kerddet, from Proto-Celtic *kerd-o- (compare Cornish kerdhes, Breton kerzed), from Proto-Indo-European *kerd- (compare Old English hratian (to rush, hasten), Ancient Greek κραδάω (kradáō, to swing, brandish), Sanskrit [script needed] (kūrdati, he leaps)).
