From Middle Welsh kerddet, from Proto-Celtic *kerd-o- (compare Cornish kerdhes, Breton kerzed), from Proto-Indo-European *kerd- (compare Old English hratian ‘to rush, hasten’, Ancient Greek κραδάω (kradân) ‘to swing, brandish’, Sanskrit kūrdati ‘he leaps’).
